Zippin Pippin Finds New Home: Elvis Presley’s favorite amusement park ride is zippin’ off to North Carolina. A roller coaster called the Zippin Pippin has been sold to tourism officials in Roanoke Rapids.
A pair of Nashville collectors bought the coaster at auction in June and said Friday they sold it to Roanoke Rapids for the planned Carolina Crossroads entertainment complex. The coaster, built in 1923, will be part of an amusement area.
The ride used to be the top attraction at Libertyland, an amusement park in Memphis (Tennessee) that Presley often rented for private parties. The park closed last year due to falling attendance and financial losses.
